The research project will consider economic efficiency and the law reform process in the two developing countries China and Indonesia, with particular regard to the attractiveness of law and to the role of customary law.The research project will critically examine the World Bank's findings and observations about these two countries in the selected areas from the three "Doing Business" reports as indicated at the commencement of this application. Advantages and disadvantages of the civil law system for these developing countries will be examined. In examining Indonesia's economic decline and China's extraordinary economic success, explanations for successful adaptations of foreign legal reforms will be considered. Thailand will also be considered.
